- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2023Very interesting and informative, as are all of Ken Burns' historical programs.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2016I have loved this film since I saw it when it was first made. I am a retired professional historian who worked near a Shaker museum, and I taught about this group for many years. None of my college-age students thought celibacy was a good idea, but most of them did come to understand how a drastic change of sexual practice made sense for many people (especially women) in the era of the Shakers' flourishing. And beyond that fundamental principle, there is much to admire about a group of people devoted to shared hard work, a simple and quiet life, and thoughtful technological innovations in so many areas of daily life and proto-industrial production. I actually had the privilege of meeting two of the modern Shaker sisters in this film, and they had an aura about them of spiritual wholeness the contentment of choices in life that had turned out well.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2013We loved this film but found it a bit slow. Apart from that it is excellent, informative and exceptionally beautiful as can also be said about the Shakers philosophy and the things they made. Recommended but one star subtracted because of the length - or lack of more shots.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2013I really liked this film! I learned a lot about Shakers and who they were. Most people do not know about this religious group and that today (2013) there are only three people in the entire world left that are Shakers. I have a deep respect for these people and their religious belief. This film is a wonderful historical educational tool that talks about a group of religious sect that most people are not aware even existed.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2024I wanted this one hour video about the Shakers to be good. After all, this documentary is by Ken Burns, who has brought us wonderful historical analyses and miniseries - who can possibly forget The Civil war? However, it simply not good. It was an earlier work by Burns, and he must have learned along the way. This falls far short of a thorough and careful documentation of the incredible movement of the Shakers, and I actually wish it did not exist. Ken, if you are reading this, please go back and do it right.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2014This is one of Ken Burn's, early efforts and productions. Whether by intention or not, it, like Shaker furniture and architecture, it is beautiful in it's simplicity. I first taped this production on my home VHS when it first premiered on PBS. I duplicated it and sent it to friends I knew would be interested. All loved it and sent it on or duplicated it themselves. However that was many many years ago. The VHS tape disintegrated so I bought a dvd version. I have some Shaker furniture, so now when people ask about the Shakers I "lend", them a copy of this dvd. Trouble is, I never get it back!! This reviewed copy is not the first or only I have bought. But it is the last I will lend.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2014During my Seminary Studies in Church History I had to read about The Shakers. After 25 years I thought to review my knowledge
by watching this DVD. I like for PBS making lots of interesting documentary on Christian subject. With lots of interview and photographs producer had tied to best but I felt there are many areas in documentary could not touch. However, the decline of
Shaker is well explained. I wish there were real live footage of Shakers. The decline came to shakers because they could not move with the changes in the world.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2022If you're into simple life or practicality you'll like this. Amazing to think of all they did to get by..except procreate, which may have been their demise..they weren't Amish, but had the frugality to match.
