I accidentally deleted an important ChatGPT chat. The chat was also open in the Microsoft Store app on Windows, so I still have some cached files and I found some mostly transcribed text stored in files with extensions like .ldb, .json, and others. Some files don’t have an extension and are simply says “file.” Is there any way to recover it?

Once deleted the conversation is gone forever. It's possible that OpenAI MIGHT be able to recover the chat, but only OpenAI would be able to do that. While you were using a UWP application, you were connected to a service ran by OpenAI, so only OpenAI can help you. ChatGPT conversations are not stored locally on the system. You can open untyped files, i.e., without extension, in a text editor (e.g., Notepad, Kate) or a hex editor. Just drop each into an editor and see what's there. Commented Jul 24 at 18:01
  • @DrMoishePippik - Any data files contained within WindowsApps would not be accessible to the author, and knowing how the ChatGPT application is architectured, the conversations are not even stored locally on the client system. Commented Jul 24 at 18:33

As others have noted, when trying to identify the content of files a good place to start is by opening them in a Text Editor. Plain ol' Notepad is just fine at doing this. The files don't need an extension to contain text data. File extensions don't actually control the content of the file, and it is not uncommon for applications to forego extensions for internal-use files.

So, open the files you have, one by one, in Notepad, and see if what you're looking for is in there.

If you don't know how to open files without extensions in Notepad:

  1. Right-click on the file and click Open With...
  2. In the Open With... menu find and choose Notepad.

Alternatively:

  1. Open Notepad.
  2. File > Open.
  3. Change the file type to All files (.)
  4. Choose the file you wish to open.
