Special Issue: Innovations in Public Transport Infrastructure and Systems – Selected Papers from hEART 2025
This Special Issue in Elsevier's Journal of Public Transport invites high-quality original contributions presented at the hEART 2025 symposium, focusing on the future of public transport systems. We seek papers that investigate innovative infrastructure, emerging vehicle technologies, and multimodal integration in an evolving urban mobility landscape.
Scope of the Special Issue
We welcome quantitative, model-based, and data-driven research that addresses design, operation, and strategic planning in next-generation public transport. The issue particularly emphasizes studies that evaluate the impact of technological and systemic innovations on accessibility, efficiency, and user experience.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Innovative Vehicles
Autonomous shuttles and buses, modular concepts, and electric or hydrogen-powered fleets.
Intelligent Depots & Fleet Management
Optimization of depot locations, charging infrastructure, dispatching, and real-time scheduling.
Smart Transit Stops & Stations
Adaptive infrastructure with digital passenger information systems and inclusive design features.
Multimodal Hubs & Transfers
Seamless connections between public transit, micromobility, shared services, and regional rail.
User-Centric Infrastructure
Concepts that enhance inclusivity, safety, and responsiveness to real-time user needs.
Simulation & Digital Tools
Applications of simulation, optimization, and digital twin technologies for planning and operations.
We encourage submissions that evaluate how innovations in infrastructure and vehicle design affect public transport demand, service levels, and sustainability. The Special Issue is open to extended versions of hEART 2025 conference papers, as well as other original works aligned with the thematic scope.
All manuscripts will be subject to standard peer review according to the journal’s quality criteria.
Manuscript submission information:
All submissions must be original and may not be under review elsewhere. All manuscripts will be submitted via the Journal of Public Transportation (JPUBTR) online submission system. Authors should indicate that the paper is submitted for consideration for publication in this special issue. When choosing Manuscript “Article Type” during the submission procedure, click “VSI: Heart 2025 -JPUBTR”, otherwise your submission will be handled as a regular manuscript.
All submitted papers should address significant issues pertinent to the theme of this issue and fall within the scope of JPUBTR. Criteria for acceptance include originality, contribution and scientific merit. All manuscripts must be written in English with high scientific writing standards. Acceptance for publication will be based on referees’ and editors’ recommendations, following a detailed peer review process.
