Neuronal Circuits for Flexible Cognition

Special issue information:

The ability to adapt perception, thoughts, and actions to meet changing goals and environments is central to behavior. This adaptability hinges on the dynamic functioning of neuronal circuits, yet the precise mechanisms by which neural circuits enable cognitive flexibility remain an open question. How do neural networks reorganize to facilitate shifts in attention, decision-making, or strategies guiding flexible behavior? What roles do different brain regions and their interactions play in supporting such plasticity? How can subcortical neuromodulation dynamically alter how circuits process and transfer information?

This featured Scientific Theme in Current Research in Neurobiology seeks to address these questions by inviting the research community to submit their research work that explores the structure, function, and dynamics of neuronal circuits involved in flexible cognition across species. We encourage a wide array of studies, from investigations into the synaptic and cellular foundations of circuit flexibility to systems-level analyses of behavior and computational modeling approaches that capture the diverse complexity of flexible cognitive processes.
