The VC-3 Decoder Package is a software-only decoding solution for SMPTE 2019-2006 (VC-3) video streams. VC-3 is also compliant to the DNxHD codec. The lossy HD codec was originally designed by Avid, and is mainly used in post-production and mastering environments.

VC-3 is an intra-frame only format offering extraordinary quality, but at the same time reducing storage and bandwidth requirements on the user’s side. So the format is based on a picture-by-picture coding approach where each picture is completely self-contained and can be extracted as an individual unit. It allows 8-bit and 10-bit sampling depths for 4:2:2 sampling of 1920x1080 and 1280x720 video raster. VC-3 is suitable to be used as intermediate codec and can provide bitrates up to 220 Mbps.

The MainConcept VC-3 Decoder Package offers real-time decoding and is fully compliant with original Avid DNxHD source streams. The VC-3 frames are demultiplexed from an MXF container.

Availability:

For Windows, Mac and Linux, the codec package consists of a Low Level API (in the C programming language). Under Windows, it additionally includes DirectShow filters for decoding and encoding. The decoder filter can be used by any DirectShow® application (e.g. Windows® Media Player).

The Decoder Package is available as 32-bit as well as 64-bit version for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
