I have heard it said that the term 'Christian' was originally (Acts 11:26) a term of derision. christianity.stackexchange.com/q/56043/47250 So maybe there are two questions here: Why is Papist used in derision? and Why is Papist received as derision? Commented 14 hours ago

That's a good point. Commented 14 hours ago
  • (One way to distinguish is to use capital-C ‘Catholic’ for the Roman church and those in communion with it, and small-c ‘catholic’ for the more general term as used in the Nicene Creed etc.  But that could be easy to miss in print, and clumsy to make in speech.) Commented 4 hours ago
