}In summer at night in the Bering Sea hydromedusae and scyphomedusae formed dense aggregations at the surface in convergences apparently produced by Langmuir circulation cells. During strong winds distance between parallel rows regularly exceeded 100 m; densities of medusae within rows reached 1,000 m−3. Physical and behavioral factors can increase spatial aggregation and thereby alter the rate of encounter of medusae with prey, predators, and competitors. The importance of Langmuir circulation…

Riding Langmuir circulations and swimming in circles: a novel form of clustering behavior by the scyphomedusaLinuche unguiculata
- 1992
Environmental Science, Biology
Patch formation probably improves reproductive success by reducing sperm dilution and probably reduces cluster breakup, and in situ observations and in vitro video recording showed that the medusae swam in horizontal, near-surface, circular, clockwise trajectories.

Influence of tidally induced fronts and Langmuir circulations on distribution and movements of presettlement fishes around a coral reef
- 1991
Environmental Science
Because of a “halo” of oceanographic features such as tidal fronts, the reef may be a larger target for presettlement fishes than its topography would suggest and some organisms are advected into slicks, while others respond to high concentrations of zooplanktonic food and remain in slicks.
Sun-compass migration by Aurelia aurita (Scyphozoa): population retention and reproduction in Saanich Inlet, British Columbia

Environmental Science, Biology
Observations of spawning A. aurita in these swarms suggest that sun-compass migration and aggregative behavior may have evolved to facilitate reproduction and to maintain the population within this fjord throughout the year.
Aggregations of the jellyfish Aurelia labiata:abundance, distribution, association with age-0 walleye pollock, and behaviors promoting aggregation in Prince William Sound, Alaska, USA

Environmental Science, Biology
The potential advantages of aggregation include increased fertilization success, retention near shore where planula settlement sites and zooplankton prey may be more abundant, retention in convergences where zoopLankton are concentrated, and reduced predation.

Environmental Science, Biology
This work characterized the swimming speed and direction, trajectories, and spatial distribution of daphniids in still water and in response to Langmuir circulation‐like flows of various strengths and investigated the effects of active swimming vs. passive behavior and of swimming direction on Langmuir circulation‐associated aggregations.

Topographically Controlled Fronts in the Ocean and Their Biological Influence
- 1988
Biology, Environmental Science
Topographically generated fronts affect the distribution of sediments, and they aggregate waterborne eggs, larvae, and plankton, which influences the distribution and density of benthic assemblages and of pelagic secondary and tertiary predators.
