}It is concluded that Quaoar has been recently resurfaced, either by impact exposure of previously buried (shielded) ices or by cryovolcanic outgassing, or by a combination of these processes.

Physics, Environmental Science
We present the first reported adaptive optics spectra of Charon in the H and K bands, which examine the anti-Pluto and sub-Pluto hemispheres. The ice temperature is estimated at 40-50 K, based on the…
The Solar System Beyond The Planets
- 2006
Physics
The Kuiper belt contains a vast number of objects in a flattened, ring-like volume beyond the orbit of Neptune. These objects are collisionally processed relics from the accretion disk of the Sun…
DETECTIONS OF TRANS-NEPTUNIAN ICE IN PROTOPLANETARY DISKS
- 2014
Physics, Environmental Science
We present Herschel Space Observatory PACS spectra of T Tauri stars, in which we detect amorphous and crystalline water ice features. Using irradiated accretion disk models, we determine the disk…

Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) accreted from a melange of volatile ices, carbonaceous matter, and rock of mixed interstellar and solar nebular provenance. The transneptunian region, where this accretion…

[1] The water ice on the three outermost Galilean satellites of Jupiter has a lattice structure that can vary from crystalline to amorphous. Amorphous ice is crystallized by heating, while…
Long-Term Evolution of Objects in the Kuiper Belt Zone—Effects of Insolation and Radiogenic Heating

Physics, Environmental Science
Abstract The Kuiper Belt zone is unique insofar as the major heat sources of objects a few tens of kilometers in size—solar radiation on the one hand and radioactive decay on the other—have…
