SummaryReports in the literature regarded the insoluble sulfide of selenium as being equally toxic and as easily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract as soluble selenium compounds. However, the sulfide was actually found to possess very low toxicity (LD 50 per os in mice: 3.7 gm/kg) and the symptomatology proved to be quite different from that of sodium selenite intoxication (LD 50: 48 mg/kg). Chronic oral administration of 5, 25 or 125 mg/kg/day of selenium sulfide for 7 1/2 weeks is…

Toxicology of selenium and tellurium and their compounds.

A comprehensive survey of the toxicological properties of selenium andTellurium and their compounds is presented and it appears that tellurium is less toxic than selenarium, although there are exceptions to this rule.

Fluorometric Selenium Determinations in the Liver of Normal Pigs and in Pigs Affected with Nutritional Muscular Dystrophy and Liver Dystrophy

The selenium concentration of livers and kidneys in normal pigs and in pigs affected with nutritional muscular dystrophy and liver Dystrophy was determined and was in good agreement with the favourable results obtained with seenium therapy.
