Increases and expansion of anthropogenic emissions of both oxidized nitrogen compounds, NOx, and a reduced nitrogen compound, NH3, have driven an increase in nitrogen deposition. We estimate global NOx and NH3 emissions and use a model of the global troposphere, MOGUNTIA, to examine the pre-industrial and contemporary quantities and spatial patterns of wet and dry NOy and NHx deposition. Pre-industrial wet plus dry NOx and NHx deposition was greatest for tropical ecosystems, related to soil…

THE ATMOSPHERIC NITROGEN BUDGET OVER THE SOUTH AFRICAN HIGHVELD

Molecular nitrogen is a highly abundant element in the atmosphere; it is stable and not very reactive. Anthropogenic activities have caused greater concentrations of nitrogencontaining compounds that

A first record of bulk atmospheric deposition patterns of major ions in southern South America

Despite the importance of long-term atmospheric deposition of ions for vegetation productivity and biogeochemistry, southern South America lacks long-term deposition records. We report a 6-year-long

EXAMINING THE SOURCES AND TRANSPORT OF REACTIVE NITROGEN EMISSIONS USING STABLE ISOTOPES TECHNIQUES

Reactive nitrogen (Nr) emissions (i.e., NOx, HNO3, and NH3) from the transportation and electricity-generating sectors are declining due to increasingly stringent air quality regulations and

Geological Record of Atmospheric Nitrogen Fixation During Explosive Supereruptions: The Case of Tecopa Basin, California

Nitrate in dry sedimentary records has long been associated with long‐term atmospheric deposition and biological activity. Recent discoveries of nitrate with an atmospheric origin in volcanic
