This contemporary review discusses interesting and recent findings in the area of occupational seafood allergy including high-risk occupations, environmental risk factors for airborne exposures, major and minor allergens implicated and innovative approaches in diagnosing and managing occupational allergy and asthma associated with seafood processing.

Food processing and occupational respiratory allergy‐ An EAACI position paper

Further studies are needed to identify and characterize major food allergens and define occupational exposure limits, evaluate the relative contribution of respiratory versus cutaneous sensitization to food antigens, evaluate the role of raw versus cooked food in influencing risk, and define the absolute or relative contraindication of patients with ingestion‐related food allergy, pollinosis, or oral allergy syndrome continuing to work with exposure to aerosolized food allergic agents.

Clinical Management of Seafood Allergy.

Occupational Asthma and Its Causation in the UK Seafood Processing Industry

Data show an excess incidence of OA in the UK seafood processing industry during 1992–2017, with limited airborne monitoring data for the processing of prawn, crab, and salmon suggesting that significant exposure to major seafood allergens can occur in this industry.

Occupational allergy to food-derived allergens

The worker should be educated in managing future possible episodes that may also occur out of the workplace, by instance after accidental ingestion of the culprit allergen, and to carry 2 pre-loaded adrenaline delivery systems and a MedicAlert bracelet.

Seafood allergy: Allergen, epitope mapping and immunotherapy strategy

The current situation of seafood allergen identification and designation by the World Health Organization/IUIS Allergen Nomenclature Sub-Committee and the recent advances in identifying the IgE-binding epitopes of seafood allergens were concluded.

Occupational Asthma in the Food Industry

Intervention strategies effective in reducing airborne allergen exposure in flour and seafood industry and SIT and omalizumab might represent further management options in IgE-mediated OA in food industry.

Comprehensive Review of Seafood Allergens: Regulations, Detection Methods, and Implications for Public Health

These tests, such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays and molecular assays are essential for both allergen detection in food products and the diagnosis of seafood allergies in individuals.

Respiratory symptoms, sensitisation and occupational exposure in the shrimp processing industry

The work environment contained tropomyosin and other allergenic proteins as well as irritants as well as irritants, highlighting the need for protective measures, especially in the cooking and peeling departments.

Rhino Conjunctivitis and Asthma Among Seafood Processing Workers in Greenland. A Cross-Sectional Study

The study showed that a considerable proportion of workers in the Greenlandic seafood processing industry had occupational asthma and rhino conjunctivitis, and showed high sensitization levels toward snow crab, shrimp, and the fish parasite, A. simplex, which supports the hypothesis of a considerable degree of underreporting of occupational allergic airway disease.

Occupational seafood allergy: a review

The range of allergic disease associated with occupational exposure to crab is well characterised, whereas for other seafood agents the evidence is somewhat limited, and there is a need for further epidemiological studies to better characterise this risk.

Seafood workers and respiratory disease: an update

Molecular studies of the allergens suggest that aside from tropomyosin and parvalbumin, other as yet uncharacterized allergens are important, which needs to be considered in order to standardize exposure assessment techniques, which are key to assessing the impact of interventions.

IgE-mediated sensitization in seafood processing workers.

Investigation of the prevalence, work-related symptoms, and possible risk factors in this occupationally exposed population of fish and seafood processing workers in Greece found presence of atopy, intensity, and duration of exposure was found as potential risk factors for IgE sensitization.

New insights into seafood allergy

Molecular characterization of more universal marker allergens for the three major seafood groups will improve current component-resolved clinical diagnosis and have a significant impact on the management of allergic patients, on food labeling and on future immunotherapy for seafood allergy.

Shellfish allergy

Future research on the molecular structure of tropomyosins with a focus on the immunological and particularly clinical cross‐reactivity will improve diagnosis and management of this potentially life‐threatening allergy and is essential for future immunotherapy.

Salmon allergen exposure, occupational asthma, and respiratory symptoms among salmon processing workers.

A sensitive method to measure salmon antigen in air was developed and found that filleting workers were most exposed, and it is important to reduce aerosols by improving the ventilation system, machines and organization of work since respiratory symptoms at work among workers were common.

Fish Allergy: In Review

This contemporary review discusses interesting and new findings in the area of fish allergy including demographics, novel allergens identified, immunological mechanisms of sensitization, and innovative approaches in diagnosing and managing this life-long disease.

Occupational allergy and asthma among salt water fish processing workers.

The gendered distribution of work and exposures in fish processing operations together with atopy and cigarette smoking are important determinants of occupational allergy and asthma.
