We analyze age distributions of two nearby rich stellar clusters, the NGC 2024 (Flame Nebula) and Orion Nebula cluster (ONC) in the Orion molecular cloud complex. Our analysis is based on samples from the MYStIX survey and a new estimator of pre-main sequence (PMS) stellar ages, AgeJX, derived from X-ray and near-infrared photometric data. To overcome the problem of uncertain individual ages and large spreads of age distributions for entire clusters, we compute median ages and their confidence…

Intracluster age gradients in numerous young stellar clusters

The pace and pattern of star formation leading to rich young stellar clusters is quite uncertain. In this context, we analyze the spatial distribution of ages within 19 young (median t<3 Myr on the

The Structure of the Young Star Cluster NGC 6231. II. Structure, Formation, and Fate

The young cluster NGC 6231 (stellar ages ∼2–7 Myr) is observed shortly after star formation activity has ceased. Using the catalog of 2148 probable cluster members obtained from Chandra, VVV, and

THE SPATIAL STRUCTURE OF YOUNG STELLAR CLUSTERS. II. TOTAL YOUNG STELLAR POPULATIONS

We investigate the intrinsic stellar populations (estimated total numbers of OB and pre-main-sequence stars down to 0.1 M ⊙ ?> ) that are present in 17 massive star-forming regions (MSFRs) surveyed

The Structure of the Young Star Cluster NGC 6231. I. Stellar Population

NGC 6231 is a young cluster (age ∼2–7 Myr) dominating the Sco OB1 association (distance ∼1.59 kpc) with ∼100 O and B stars and a large pre-main-sequence stellar population. We combine a reanalysis of

THE SPATIAL STRUCTURE OF YOUNG STELLAR CLUSTERS. III. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES AND EVOLUTIONARY STATES

We analyze the physical properties of stellar clusters that are detected in massive star-forming regions in the MYStIX project—a comparative, multiwavelength study of young stellar clusters within

Evidence for feedback and stellar-dynamically regulated bursty star cluster formation: the case of the Orion Nebula Cluster

(abridged) A scenario for the formation of multiple co-eval populations separated in age by about 1 Myr in very young clusters (VYCs, ages less than 10 Myr) and with masses in the range 600-20000

THE STRUCTURE, DYNAMICS, AND STAR FORMATION RATE OF THE ORION NEBULA CLUSTER

The spatial morphology and dynamical status of a young, still-forming stellar cluster provide valuable clues to the conditions during the star formation event and the processes that regulated it. We

Mapping young stellar populations towards Orion with Gaia DR1

Abstract OB associations are prime sites for the study of star formation processes and of the interaction between young massive stars with the interstellar medium. Furthermore, the kinematics and

Star cluster formation from turbulent clumps. II. Gradual star cluster formation

We investigate the dynamical evolution of star clusters during their formation, assuming that they are born from a turbulent starless clump of a given mass that is embedded within a parent

RAPID CIRCUMSTELLAR DISK EVOLUTION AND AN ACCELERATING STAR FORMATION RATE IN THE INFRARED DARK CLOUD M17 SWex

We present a catalog of 840 X-ray sources and first results from a 100 ks Chandra X-ray Observatory imaging study of the filamentary infrared (IR) dark cloud G014.225–00.506, which forms the central

No wide spread of stellar ages in the Orion Nebula Cluster

The wide luminosity dispersion seen for stars at a given effective temperature in the Hertzsprung–Russell diagrams of young clusters and star-forming regions is often interpreted as due to

MASS AND LUMINOSITY EVOLUTION OF YOUNG STELLAR OBJECTS

A model of protostar mass and luminosity evolution in clusters gives new estimates of cluster age, protostar birthrate, accretion rate, and mean accretion time. The model assumes constant protostar

A CHANDRA STUDY OF THE ROSETTE STAR-FORMING COMPLEX. III. THE NGC 2237 CLUSTER AND THE REGION'S STAR FORMATION HISTORY

We present high spatial resolution Chandra X-ray images of the NGC 2237 young stellar cluster on the periphery of the Rosette Nebula. We detect 168 X-ray sources, 80% of which have stellar

A Chandra Study of the Rosette Star-forming Complex. I. The Stellar Population and Structure of the Young Open Cluster NGC 2244

We present the first high spatial resolution X-ray study of NGC 2244, the 2 Myr old stellar cluster in the Rosette Nebula, using Chandra. Over 900 X-ray sources are detected; 77% have optical or

Quantitative evidence of an intrinsic luminosity spread in the Orion nebula cluster

Aims. We study the distribution of stellar ages in the Orion nebula cluster (ONC) using accurate HST photometry taken from HST Treasury Program observations of the ONC utilizing the cluster distance

The Stellar Population and Origin of the Mysterious High-Latitude Star-forming Cloud CG 12

The mysterious high Galactic latitude cometary globule CG 12 has been observed with the ACIS detector on board the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. We detect 128 X-ray sources, of which half are likely

Star Formation in Space and Time: The Orion Nebula Cluster

We examine the pattern of star birth in the Orion Nebula cluster (ONC), with the goal of discerning the cluster's formation mechanism. Outside the Trapezium, the distribution of stellar masses is

The sequence of low- and high-mass star formation in the young stellar cluster IRAS 19343+2026

BVRIJHK photometry, Spitzer-GLIMPSE photometry and HK-band spectroscopy were used to study the stellar content of IRAS 19343+2026, a (proto)star/cluster candidate, located close to the Galactic

OVERVIEW OF THE MASSIVE YOUNG STAR-FORMING COMPLEX STUDY IN INFRARED AND X-RAY (MYStIX) PROJECT

The Massive Young Star-Forming Complex Study in Infrared and X-ray (MYStIX) seeks to characterize 20 OB-dominated young clusters and their environs at distances d ⩽ 4 kpc using imaging detectors on

The Elephant Trunk Nebula and the Trumpler 37 cluster: contribution of triggered star formation to the total population of an HII region

Rich young stellar clusters produce Hii regions whose expansion into the nearby molecular cloud is thought to trigger the formation of new stars. However, the importance of this mode of star
